From Farm to Fork: The Journey of Martha Leonard Mobley
In the heart of North Carolina, Martha Leonard Mobley’s journey began at North Carolina State University, where she pursued not one, but two Bachelor of Science degrees in Animal Science and Food Science, graduating in 1983. Her hunger for knowledge didn’t stop there; she continued her academic pursuits, earning a Master’s in Adult & Community College Education with a minor in Animal Science in 1994.
Armed with a wealth of knowledge and a passion for agriculture, Martha embarked on a remarkable career that spans over three decades. Since April 11, 1988, Martha has served as an Agricultural Extension Agent at the Franklin County Cooperative Extension Center, part of the NC Cooperative Extension Service under North Carolina State University. Her responsibilities encompass a diverse range of tasks, from livestock management and Local Foods to agritourism development and climate change, showcasing her dedication to sustainable farming practices.
In addition to her role as an Extension Agent, Martha is the proud, sole owner of Meadow Lane Farm, LLC, a Century Farm established in 1911, specializing in fresh market organic vegetables and natural meats which she proudly sells at the Durham County Farmers’ Market and direct to consumers. Through Meadow Lane Farm, Martha not only provides high-quality produce and meats but also champions the local farming community. Her commitment to supporting small farmers is evident in initiatives like the annual “Dinner in the Meadow,” a fundraiser benefiting farmers in the region.
Beyond her farm and Extension work, Martha is deeply involved in various boards and organizations, including the Durham Farmers Market and the United Way of Franklin County. She is also a board chair of the Leonard-Mobley Small Farm Fund, which aims to support and empower small-scale farmers. Martha’s leadership extends regionally, with board roles in organizations like the Franklin County Tourism Development Authority, Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, the NC Horse Council, the NC Cattlemen’s Association and so many more!
Martha’s journey is not just about professional accomplishments; it’s also marked by a passion for continuous learning and development. Over the years, she has attended numerous conferences and seminars, honing her skills and staying abreast of the latest agricultural practices. From her involvement in the National Beef Improvement Federation to her participation in sustainable agriculture conferences, Martha’s commitment to lifelong learning is unwavering.
Throughout her career, Martha has achieved remarkable milestones, from securing funding for agricultural programs to spearheading initiatives like the “Animal Agriculture Field Day” and the “Franklin County Farm Foods & Crafts Tour.” Her dedication has been recognized through numerous awards, including the Edgar J. Boone & Ethel B. Boone Adult Education Award and the Distinguished Service Award from the NC and National Association of County Agricultural Agents.
But Martha’s journey began long before her professional accolades. As a standout student and active member of 4-H, Martha laid the foundation for her future in agriculture. From winning awards in beef projects to representing her state at the Chicago-4-H Congress, Martha’s early recognition foreshadowed her future impact on the agricultural community.
Today, Martha Leonard Mobley stands as a beacon of inspiration in the agricultural world, embodying the values of hard work, dedication, and a deep-rooted love for the land. Her journey from farm to fork is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance in shaping a sustainable future for generations to come.
